Edna's Essentials

In this game you play as Edna, who runs the local gas station and convenience store outside a small town, where everyone knows everyone… or at least they do on some days. A new energy company, M-ERGY, has developed a renewable bio fuel that is becoming increasingly popular in Edna’s small town, while people’s memory seems to become more and more… selective. How lucky for them that they can make new ones!

This game was created in 48 hours during the Science Jam 2024 in Gothenburg and was inspired by the scientists Marie Widengård and Ann-Sofi Kall's research on fair biofuel and the legal, political, ethical and environmental difficulties and conflicts that arise from the bio- and fossil fuel industry and how to develop fair solutions for all parties.

Based on our research topic, we decided to create a concept with fictional natural resources and the concept of using human memories as fuel when all other resources are gone, and what that means for the narrative. Two characters are married, but they don’t remember and they both think they other one is renting their spare room. In the game you collect and shelf store items, complete daily tasks and assist costumers. Through the dialogues with some characters, Edna collects and stores memories that the player later use to unlock more dialogues.
